The Hundred-Word Review: SAVING MR. BANKS (2013)

Director:
John Lee Hancock

Screenplay:
Kelly Marcel
Sue Smith

Main Cast:
Emma Thompson
Tom Hanks
Colin Farrell
Paul Giamatti
Jason Schwartzman
Ruth Wilson
Bradley Whitford
B.J. Novak
Rachel Griffiths
Annie Rose Buckley

While this film may start out as your run-of-the-mill Disney fairytale, it moves to darker nuances quite early in the story thanks to a well-constructed narrative structure. As the Sherman brothers belt out the immortal lyrics that made "Mary Poppins'" a timeless classic, P.L. Travers, embodied by the sublime Emma Thompson, recollects her heartbreaking childhood and we, the viewers, go from disliking her uptight demeanour to feeling elated at her newfound serenity in the space of a couple of hours. Tom Hanks is perfectly at ease as larger-than-life Walt Disney and Colin Farrell is harrowingly memorable as Travers's unfortunate father.

The Hundred-Word Review: JACK RYAN: SHADOW RECRUIT (2014)

Director:
Kenneth Branagh

Screenplay:
Adam Cozad
David Koepp
based on the characters invented by Tom Clancy

Main Cast:
Chris Pine
Kenneth Branagh
Kevin Costner
Keira Knightley

The main problem with this film is that it is a spy story that does not feel like one because of its lacking cinematography. Each frame is languid, there is no sense of urgency and no sense of discomfort to rattle the viewer. The film's unremarkable score follows suit. As for the script, the characters are not clearly outlined, which makes it hard to empathize with Jack Ryan's struggles, despite a good effort from Chris Pine. Kenneth Branagh's direction feels too laid back, even disinterested at times, but he excels as the film's villain, complete with a spot-on Russian accent.

Miglior attrice protegonista - Cate Blanchett, "Blue Jasmine"
Miglior attore protagonista - Matthew McConaughey, "Dallas Buyers Club"
Miglior attrice non protagonista - Lupita Nyong'o, "12 Years a Slave"

"I think one reason he has a chance to pull an upset on Oscar night, whisking victory away from McConaughey, is that the whole “It’s time” vibe that’s been a cornerstone of this McConaughey moment applies, if anything, even more to Leo. As much as any actor, he has been carrying the damn industry for close to 20 years. Forget The Aviator and the unspeakably awful Gangs of New York. DiCaprio’s finest Scorsese performance may well be the one he gave in Shutter Island — at least, his finest until now. For in The Wolf of Wall Street, DiCaprio does what only a born movie star who is also an audacious actor can do: He uses the true-life character of Jordan Belfort to take us on a magic carpet ride of immorality. His speeches to the Stratton Oakmont offices are fascinatingly jacked up, full of manic movement and discovery — they’re pep talks turned into athletic events. The words, as Leo delivers them, give off a hum; it’s “Greed is good” remade into a corporate anthem of smash-your-enemies bravado. Watching The Wolf of Wall Street, of course we admire the way that Belfort does and says whatever he wants (that’s what we always love about movie gangsters, even when they don’t carry guns), but he also comes off as a closet madman, and that’s the honesty of DiCaprio’s performance" [link: The Best Actor race is the hottest ever. And yes, Leonardo could win by Owen Gleiberman]

Speciale Oscar 2014. Recensione breve: Blue Jasmine (di W. Allen, 2013)

Candidato ai premi Oscar: - Miglior attrice protagonista
                                                       - Miglior Attrice non protagonista
                                                    - Miglior sceneggiatura originale

“There’s a world of men out there who’d never think of ripping a phone out of the wall”

Gli altri candidati: 12 Years a Slave
                           Captain Phillips
                           Philomena
                           Rush

Golden Globes 2014: Miglior film d'animazione.

                                  Despicable Me 2
